Working with photographic material primarily from the 1940s to the 1960s — refined with ink and paired with short, incisive captions — Stenmark has developed an artistic voice that is both unique and instantly recognizable.
His seemingly straightforward technique often contains multiple layers of meaning. The interplay between image and text evokes reactions ranging from laughter and surprise to recognition and quiet melancholy. The result is a restrained form of satire in which everyday absurdities meet a deeper reflection on the human condition.
Educated at Konstfack (University College of Arts, Crafts and Design) between 1975 and 1979, Stenmark became widely known through his contributions to Aftonbladet and has since remained an influential figure in contemporary Swedish visual art. Over the years, he has published approximately 25 books and collections, making his work accessible to a wide and devoted audience.
